Occupational Health and Safety is investigating after a worker was killed on the job at a city-run work site in south Edmonton.

Emergency crews responded to a city drainage project, near 142 Street and Ellerslie Road, Tuesday afternoon.

On Wednesday morning, officials said the individual, identified by OHS as a 44-year-old male, employed by the City of Edmonton, was part of the city’s tunneling crew.

Officials said the man was underground when the incident happened – and there were no reports that anyone else was injured. Projects across the city have been halted until more is known about what happened.

As a result, about 100 city employees who work in tunneling were off the job Wednesday.

Mayor Don Iveson issued a statement late Wednesday afternoon in response to the death, sending condolences to the family, co-workers and friends of the deceased:

“It is troubling that this happened at a City worksite but I know the City is cooperating fully with the Province’s Occupational Health and Safety investigators.

“Our Council will ensure we receive updates on the results and outcomes of that investigation and act to implement any recommendations that will protect our workers.”

The city said the last time a city employee died on the worksite was in April, when a worker on a gravel yard was killed.
