Edmonton police are planning to set up a special unit to deal specifically with concerns surrounding radicalization and terrorism cases.
EPS said the new unit is being created as police have noticed an increase in terror-related complaints over the last two years.
As a result, EPS will amalgamate intelligence personnel, investigators and outreach workers – to create the first-ever counter-terrorism unit.
“Most of these files are resource intensive, they are not just one or two investigators they often take a surveillance team, they take more probing, investigative strategies, that sort of thing, and they are long-term investigations,” Chief Rod Knecht said.
Knecht wouldn’t give specifics on the number of files police have dealt with, or how large the new unit will be.
