Edmonton police have officially called the shooting death of a man in southeast Edmonton a homicide, and have arrested and charged a man in connection to the case.

On Wednesday, officers were called to a home in the area of 25 Avenue and 46 A Street at about 4 a.m., after gunshots were reportedly heard.

Officers arrived to find a 23-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound; he was taken to hospital in critical condition, and passed away in hospital later that day.

Police have identified the victim as Nicholas Kyriacou, 23.

As a result, Mohamed Hassan Sheikh Ahmed, 28, has been charged with manslaughter with a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm contrary to a probation order, and failure to comply with a probation order.

Police said the accused is in custody.
