RCMP in Spruce Grove said one man had to be airlifted to hospital after the vehicle he was driving was hit by another vehicle Monday afternoon.

Police said the incident happened at the intersection of Secondary Highway 627 (Garden Valley Road) and Range Road 273 (Golden Spike Road) at about 1 p.m. Monday.

According to police, an SUV was headed southbound on Range Road 273, when the driver started turning left to head eastbound on Secondary Highway 627.

The SUV was struck by an eastbound one-tonne cube van in the process.

The man driving the smaller car was airlifted by STARS to hospital in Edmonton in critical condition.

The two men who were in the van were taken by ground ambulance with minor injuries.

Investigators said road conditions, alcohol or drugs did not appear to be factors in the collision.

The intersection where the collision happened was shut down for much of Monday afternoon, RCMP said they expected to have it reopened by 5 p.m.
