Edmonton police said that a man in his 40s had been charged in connection to a fatal rollover that left his passenger dead in October, 2014.

On Sunday, October 12, officers were called to a single vehicle collision at 5:30 p.m. on Yellowhead Trail and Victoria Trail.

Investigators later determined that a car was headed westbound on the Yellowhead when the driver lost control and the car rolled onto its roof underneath the Victoria Trail overpass.

The 47-year-old male driver, identified as Allan Dean Balay, was extracted from the vehicle and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

His 41-year-old female passenger was still belted in her seat, and was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics.

An impaired driving investigation was started immediately, as a Sherwood Park resident called to report a driver leaving a home after consuming alcohol – police said the driver was told to wait for a designated driver at that residence, but the man and woman decided to drive themselves, while they were impaired.

In addition, Curb the Danger received a number of calls over the same vehicle driving erratically.

Investigations found speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

Now, Balay is facing charges of manslaughter, operation of a motor vehicle over the legal limit causing death, impaired operation causing death, and dangerous driving causing death.

The passenger has been identified as Adele James.

The accused has been scheduled for Wednesday, January 14.
