RCMP said Wednesday that a man in his 30s was facing charges stemming from a Christmas Day homicide in Red Deer.

Red Deer RCMP said the body of Thomas Patrick Braconnier, 46, was found in a business vestibule near 50 Street and 50 Avenue in downtown Red Deer in the early hours of Christmas Day.

On Wednesday, RCMP said Chad Alexander Kulba, 33, was facing a charge of second degree murder in Braconnier’s death.

Police said the accused was identified as a suspect early on in the investigation, and was detained for questioning the day the victim’s body was found.

While he was in custody at the time, Kulba reportedly attempted to disarm a police officer, he was charged in connection to that incident, and he was remanded in custody.

He remained in custody, but was rearrested January 5.

In addition to the murder charge, Kulba is also facing charges of committing an indignity to a human body.

Police said Kulba and Braconnier knew each other, since they lived in the same neighbourhood – no other suspects are being sought in connection to this homicide.

Kulba is scheduled to appear in a Red Deer courtroom January 11.
