After ballots were cast and counted, the newest provincial political party now has its first leader.
Following only one round of voting, Glenn Taylor emerged the clear winner with over 55 per cent of votes cast with his name.
A total of 1,200 votes were cast in a system that allowed even absent members of the party to participate. The Alberta Party says more than 58 per cent of members voted online, or by phone.
There's no question the hundreds of party members are behind Taylor, but it's clear he has his work cut out for him, especially with a provincial election looming.
"He has to get us well known," Alberta Party MLA Dave Taylor said following Saturday's announcement. "We have to become a household name between now and the next election if at all possible."
Being leader of Alberta's newest political party is not Taylor's only current job title either, as he's still Mayor of Hinton – and it's a job he plans to keep, for now.
"Yes I am at this point," the leader of the Alberta Party said Saturday. "But I'm not sure for how long."
Taylor won the leadership election with 665 votes, with his closest runner up Randy Royer coming in with 287 votes.
The election was rounded out with Tammy Maloney earning 104 votes, and Lee Easton with 144 votes.
