The family of Edmonton’s most recent homicide victim has released a statement, a day after police identified him.

On Tuesday, detectives identified Dale Maloney, 33, as the man shot in the parking lot of a downtown restaurant on Monday afternoon.

The statement released by Maloney’s family reads:

We, the family of Dale Maloney, are trying to come to terms with the senseless, violent death of our beloved Dale in Edmonton. We are heartbroken and devastated, and find it incomprehensible that there could be such a cruel disregard for human life and dignity.

Dale had a big heart and was very kind. He and his brother opened their door to many Newfoundlanders when they went out west looking for work. He was a loyal friend, a loving son and had a great sense of humour. His smile lit up the room. He was very hard working.

The family also asked for privacy.

Police said Maloney was shot in the area of 102 Avenue and 113 Street just after 4 p.m.

Detectives said an argument between two people escalated – witnesses said the argument was over money.

Homicide investigators are still searching for a suspect or suspects in the slaying, and are looking for males in their 20s.

Anyone with information on this homicide is asked to call the Edmonton Police Service non-emergency line at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
