Edmonton police have identified the victim and the cause of death in the city’s most recent homicide, a brazen shooting in the downtown area, in broad daylight.
Police said the victim was shot in the stomach, after two men got into an argument in a parking lot in the area of 102 Avenue and 113 Street just after 4 p.m. Monday.
The victim was treated by off-duty medical personnel, a nurse and a paramedic, at the scene, and then rushed to hospital, but he died a few hours later.
On Tuesday afternoon, Police identified the murder victim as Dale Maloney, 33.
The Medical Examiner determined Maloney died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.
A local sociology professor said Tuesday that although Edmonton has seen its share of ‘gang-style’ slayings, this one is very brazen.
“It’s even more rare,” MacEwan Sociology Professor Michael Seradycz said. “This is probably unlike a lot of homicides EPS has seen in the last year or so.”
Police said it’s too early in the investigation to tell what the disturbance was about, however some witnesses told CTV News the argument was over money.
Investigators believe Maloney and the suspect did not know each other.
Witnesses said the assailants then fled in an SUV.
On Monday, Police had no description of the suspect or suspects, only that they were men in their 20s.
As for staff at the restaurant close to the scene, the company said they are being offered counseling.
Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Edmonton Police Service non-emergency line at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
