RCMP have laid a murder charge and other charges against three people relating to the disappearance of Valentine Leo Degenhardt, who was reported missing on July 19 after last being seen at a Barrhead, AB gas station two days earlier.

Norman "John" Jerret, 46, from Barrhead, has been charged with first degree murder, robbery, break and enter and indignity to a dead body. Norma McAllister, 45, has been charged with accessory after the fact and break and enter. Carl McAllister, 29, has been charged with accessory after the fact.

All three are from Barrhead, the victim’s family told CTV News that Jerret and Norma McAllister are siblings, and Carl McAllister is Norma’s son.

The mystery surrounding Degenhardt's sudden disappearance deepened after his SUV was discovered by hikers in a remote area off Highway 32 between Whitecourt and Swan Hills.

Robin Schmitke, Degenhardt's wife, made an emotional plea on August 28 for information leading to his return.

At the time of the news conference an RCMP statement confirmed the seriousness of the disappearance.

"There are elements of criminality or aspects of criminality in this that would coincide with his disappearance and this is why our major crimes unit is involved in this investigation," said RCMP spokesperson Josee Valiquette.

All three accused are in custody and are scheduled to appear in Barrhead Provincial Court on November 26.
