Weeks after Councillor Kerry Diotte announced his intention to run for mayor in the fall election, a second candidate has thrown his hat into the ring – this time, he’s from outside City Hall.

Curtis Penner announced his intention to run Monday – and said his platform is rooted in saving the city’s parks.

Penner said City Council has been selling municipal reserves or surplus parkland to developers – to build condos and seniors facilities.

“There’s a lot of infill sites like that in the City of Edmonton, in fact there’s infill sites on abandoned school sites, real surplus schools, schools that are no longer used, schools that have had the windows boarded up, schools that have the community begging our councillor to build seniors facilities in them and they want to put a shovel in the ground over here,” Penner said Monday.

Back on May 16, current City Councillor Kerry Diotte announced his intention to run for mayor.

Sitting Mayor Stephen Mandel said days later that he would not seek reelection.

Edmontonians will go to the polls October 21.
