About 200 homes on the Siksika Nation have been affected by the flood.
According to Chief Fred Rabbitcarrier a state of emergency for the area was declared Thursday night and residents were prepared for some flooding but were overwhelmed by the disaster.
“There is a feeling of hopelessness,” he explained.
“We didn’t expect it to be this devastating.”
A Facebook page has been set up regarding the situation and has called for donations such as toiletries, water, baby items, blankets, clothes and non-perishable food.
“We are still in the crisis mode,” Rabbitcarrier said.
“As far as the long term we’ll have to house these people somehow.”
Siksika Nation is located an hour east of Calgary and three kilometers south of the Trans-Canada Highway
