Around 900 people turned out to help test the new U.S. Departures area at the Edmonton International Airport (EIA) Saturday.

Volunteers were involved in a simulation that included a test of check-in, pre-board screening, baggage handling and other terminal amenities.

Many said they were impressed with the new facilities.

"Compared to other airports it's nice to see a modern facility," Brian Seutter told CTV News.

"It ran fairly smoothly."

Seutter's wife, Donna, agreed.

"It's pretty. It's open.

"It just looks wonderful," she said.

Jean MacDougall said the new terminal would make travelling for families easier.

"Everything is very streamlined. They have the family entrance for us to go through customs," she explained.

EIA president and CEO, Reg Milley, said he was very pleased with how the test went.

"We wanted to make sure that every system gets tried, gets tested," he said adding the terminal would open to the public in two weeks.

"We want to make sure it's a seamless opening for all of the travelling public."

Milley said they sought public feedback before deciding on the new look.

"We wanted to make sure people had choices with what to do and be productive with their time," he explained.

"We did a lot of up front and design work to make sure that this was going to be the most passenger-friendly airport in the country."

The new terminal is about 1.2 kilometers long and will have the capacity to serve up to 10 million passengers.
