An extreme cold warning has been issued for the City of Edmonton and surrounding area Sunday.

Environment Canada issued the warning and indicated a period of very cold wind chills is expected.

Those regions affected include Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Morinville, Mayerthorpe and Fort Saskatachewan among others.

Officials have advised residents to wear appropriate clothing, which includes synthetic and wool fabrics.

They also suggest anyone going outside should dress in layers, wear warm socks, gloves a hat and a scarf.

According to the organization’s website, “extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia”.
