Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Edmonton and the surrounding area.

According to the organization the Capital Region is in for a period of cold wind chills over the weekend and combined with the cold temperatures it will be -40 degrees Celsius or colder.

They warn that anyone who isn’t dressed warmly is at risk for frost bite and hypothermia, especially those who work outside, seniors, infants and those in the homeless population.

Their website indicate that extreme cold warnings are issued when cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevate risk for frost bite or hypothermia.

The City of Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Morinville and Fort Saskatchewan were among the various areas put under the warning.

Edmonton police said they had responded to several collisions on Saturday.

Officials said between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. there had been 27 hit and runs, six injury collisions and 116 collisions that involved property damage.

 RCMP around the province have blamed the poor weather conditions for many of the collisions they have responded to over the past few days.

According to officials, officers have responded to over 600 collisions since Thursday. About 50 of those involved injuries.

RCMP have been reminding motorists to drive with caution.

They also advised those involved in collisions to remain in their vehicles until it is safe enough to exit.
