Nineteen junior high students from St. Albert have returned home from their school trip to Boston this week.

The teens’ trip coincided with the bombings at the Boston Marathon.

Randy Roszell, the assistant principal from Sir George Simpson Junior High, said the kids did manage to have a good time and see nearly everything they wanted to see.

“We were actually outside of the city when we heard about the bombings at the finish line of the marathon,” he explained, adding they stayed out of the city Tuesday.

“We were in constant contact with the parents via a blog, via e-mails, via texting.”

The trip was part of the school’s achievement program and offered students the chance to learn about historic sites.

Roszell said the students handled the tense situation well.

“They understood the seriousness of the events but in the same breath they were just having a good time.

“The people of Boston were wonderful and they showed us exactly what Bostonians were about.”

The students arrived home Saturday night and will be back at school to share their stories next week.

“The events were really unfortunate but the kids were enjoying Boston the best they could under those circumstances,” Roszell said.
